Dad

It was January 30, 2005, 13 years ago, that my dad passed away.  We were with him to send him off. I remember saying to him, ‘it’s ok Dad, you’re about to cross the finish line,” to which he winked in response!  That was a big deal since he hadn’t blinked in a long time.  I was comforted and hope he was too.  He then ceased to breath, giving up the ghost, as they say.  I distinctly remember sensing that his spirit left the room through a specific spot.  That room is still holy ground for me.
I remember walking with dad, about 25 years ago.  My family lived in Maryland and my parents would visit a couple times a year.  We were strolling with baby Caleb and Daniel in tow.  I asked dad a question to test his spiritual understanding.  I said, “Dad, when you die and get to the pearly gates, and Jesus meets you there and asks, “Bob Fantini, why should I let you in to heaven?  What will you answer?? He said, without missing a beat, “Lord, you know all things, you know I’ve trusted in You!”
I was ecstatic!  I knew in my heart he was a shoo-in.  Here was a man who respected and loved God, who sought to follow and obey, but like all of us, he was imperfect.  His faith wasn’t in his good works to save him, but in Christ’s atoning work.  He trusted His Savior to save him.
I can’t wait to see him in heaven.  I love and miss him so much!  He was a great dad.  His love, affection, generosity, kindness and devotion help me to understand my Heavenly Father.
